Gaza Child Mental Trauma Clinic Holds Successful Open Day
December 20, 2021
On Saturday, November 20, the Gaza Child Mental Trauma Clinic (GCMTC)held its first and very successful ‘Open Day’. This was funded by Firefly International, Action for Child Trauma and IMET2000 as all three UK charities believed this a natural progression from the CATT project dealing with children with severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The mixed programme started at 0830 and went on until completion at 1660. In case of bad weather, it was held in the Museum Hotel and catered for 61 carefully selected children who had been treated over the last 2 years (28 boys and 33 girls) as well as 42 carers and many parents. They were taken by bus to the hotel and greeted by a band of clowns. This was all organised by our director in the GCMTC Mohammed el Sharef. The programme comprised a mixed list of entertainments including the Delia Arts Band providing music for singalongs, clowns, drawing and arts ‘competitions’, dance groups and a ready supply of food and drinks hot and cold. From the joy and pleasure that can be seen on the video clips and photos as well as great feedback from the carers and parents, we conclude that it was a great success and an event worth putting on say every 3 months. Well done to Mohammed and all his team. And we are so grateful for the music provided by the charity based in Gaza, the Delia Arts Centre. Many thanks to all.

In his opening speech Prof Green has pointed out how Palestinians’ unique experience has come to be at the centre of an international matrix, a spider’s cobweb, of research and learning in a new discipline in healthcare badged as EXTREME HEALTHCARE. He added, “We can turn horrible suffering and victimisation into an opportunity of global significance where you will be world leaders in this enterprise.”
The opening lecture (one out of 7) was given by our CEO Dr Malik Zaben under the title “How to Do Your First Clinical Audit”. The session was attended by more than 350 participants largely from Palestine but also from other countries in the Middle East and Africa.

IMET2000 Celebrates the Graduation of our First MSc Student in Community Mental Health
November 21, 2021
We are very pleased to share with you the good news that Ms Zareefa Shaabna has completed her MSc studies in community mental health nursing- fully sponsored by IMET2000. Whilst she is getting ready to join mental health services and serve the Palestinian community, this is what she had to say:
“My name is Zareefa Shaabna, and I was a recipient of one of the scholarships in 2019 to pursue my dream of getting a master’s degree in Community Mental Health Nursing at An-Najah National University, and I will be graduating with a GPA of 4 (Degree of Excellence).
I’m writing this letter to personally thank you for helping me pursue my dream of becoming a mental health practitioner. By awarding me the Scholarship, you have reduced my financial burden, allowing me to focus on my study and not worry about the financial aspects. This kind of Scholarship is crucial for Palestinian students with ambition and potentials who have financial constraints that prevent them from pursuing their dreams and prevent them from advancing their society, especially in areas such as mental health, which is strongly needed in our country.
I want to thank all the founders and the supporters of the IMET2000-Pal for their generosity. I hope one day I will also be able to help struggling students reach their goals in higher education by assisting them in the same way you helped me.”
Sincerely,
Zareefa Shaabna

Amanda Tombs has just recently completed three marathons with all proceeds going to IMET2000. These were Brighton September 12 th, Berlin the 26 th and Paris on October 17 th. To do this on our behalf is incredibly generous and has proven so very successful not just in completion of each in excellent times but financially for IMET2000 as she has raised over £7000 for our work in Palestine, particularly in Gaza. We are so grateful to her and also the 140 or more kind supporters who donated to this total. Another great long-standing friend Ivor Dembina has contributed substantially by donating the proceeds to her campaign from many Saturday comedy shows (7 more to go as of today!) he has put on as benefits for IMET2000 and Medical Aid for Palestine (MAP) to be used for mobile outreach clinics in the West Bank.

IMET2000 Autumn Extravaganza in aid of Child Refugees, Victims of War and of Pandemics
September 27, 2021
Our second major fundraising event in 2021 on zoom on September 27 th has turned out to be a triumph both in interest and entertainment value as well as income generator. We estimate that there was an audience of over 300 and the feedback in the last four days has been lyrical and more than encouraging. We decided to divide the programme in two halves; In the first, we concentrated all the videos and talks on the Middle East with reports from Palestine, Syria and Yemen. These depended for their success on our own team in Palestine led by our CEO, Dr Malik Zaben and with great partners Firefly International and Action for Child Trauma International. After an exceptional opening talk by the Palestinian Ambassador to the UK, Dr Husam Zumlot, we were treated to a fascinating conversation between the renowned film director Ken Loach and Farah Nabulsi, a rising Palestinian star in the film world, who has just won a BAFTA award for best short film ‘The Present’ and was shortlisted for an Oscar in the USA. Our great friend and well known stand-up comedian Imran Yusuf completed this part of the programme with much laughter at his rapid-fire humour.
In the second session, we concentrated all the programme to our projects in Africa (Uganda and Ghana) and Asia (Tibet refugee camps in India and other projects in West Bengal and in Laos). We had beautiful videos from Herona Hospital in Uganda and from our Action Through Enterprise partners in Ghana with IMET2000 support for their work with disabled children. Our long-term supporter and Patron Mark Thomas as ever made us all laugh to lift our spirits from the COVID-19 gloom. The evening was completed by an inspirational recorded video of another Patron, Jon Snow (Channel 4 newscaster)talking about his love of Uganda and its people.
Colin Green announced the exciting news that IMET2000 has donated a brand new Toyota Land Cruiser Ambulance, a large oxygen generator, 24 brand new hospital beds and mattresses and a water purification system already and thanked the sponsors BB Energy, Peak Scientific Ltd and Morningside Pharmaceuticals Ltd for their philanthropy in making all this possible in the last few months.
We cannot thank all these stars enough for giving their time pro bono as well as our colleagues in the front line, our Board of Trustees and Council of Patrons and finally all the guests and wonderful donors for huge generosity. They enabled us to hit our target and we can now budget for ever more projects and activities to meet the ever increasing demands on our services globally.

Specialist Training in Mental Health in Yemen with Action for Child Trauma International (ACTI)
July 15, 2021
We are excited to be involved with a new project in war-torn Yemen sadly in desperate need of help in the Health Sector because of the ongoing civil war. We have worked for over two years with ACTI in the CATT programme in Gaza and are impressed with the skills of the UK team and the positive reports from the Palestinian psychologists. We have therefore decided to support financially this different programme in Yemen alongside the UK charity, the British Yemeni Association, in which courses will be run by Stella and our clinical lead Dr Ghalia Al Alsha based in Amman hoping to train 30 psychologists, counsellors, teachers and social workers in this technique so that they, in turn, become trainers. As the number of cases rises, we hope to relieve hospitals by providing home-oxygen therapy for those who otherwise would have to be treated as in-patients. This project also aims to discharge patients from hospitals as soon as it is safe to do so, in order to open up more spaces for people with serious symptoms.
